Start with the kind of help you need

Describe the problem in a few sentences, including the people involved, the location, and your immediate goal. Say whether you need advice, a contract reviewed, negotiations handled, or representation in an existing case. Tell the office about any notice, summons, or scheduled appearance before sending a long account. If the matter concerns land outside Dumaguete or parties living elsewhere, include that detail. Location can matter to the legal process even when the consultation happens in the city.

Verify the person you will be engaging

Ask for the lawyer's full professional name and confirm their identity through official Philippine legal-profession records. The Supreme Court publishes a Lawyers List; questions about admission or current standing may require further confirmation with the appropriate authority. A social-media profile, an office sign, or a recommendation from an acquaintance is not a complete credential check. Make sure the person giving legal advice is the lawyer you expected to meet, and confirm who will actually be responsible for your work.

Ask about experience without seeking promises

Ask whether the lawyer regularly handles similar transactions or disputes and what information would be needed for an initial assessment. A useful answer explains the process, the uncertainties, and possible next steps. Be cautious about promises of guaranteed results or suggestions that personal connections will determine a case. Discuss practical needs too: the language you prefer, the availability of remote meetings, and how documents will be shared if you live outside Negros Oriental or spend time abroad.

Make the fee conversation specific

Request an explanation of the proposed professional fee, expenses, and work included. Ask whether appearances, document preparation, travel, filing costs, and later proceedings are covered or charged separately. Clarify payment stages and how additional work will be approved. A consultation fee is different from the cost of an entire case. Read the engagement terms and keep a copy, along with receipts for payments. If the arrangement is unclear, ask for clarification before transferring money or handing over original records.

End with a defined next step

Confirm whether the lawyer has accepted the engagement and which tasks they have agreed to undertake. An introductory conversation should not leave you assuming that someone will file a response without an agreement to do so. Ask what you should gather next, how updates will be communicated, and which dates need attention. If the office cannot assist, ask what kind of lawyer or legal-aid service may be suitable. Keep looking promptly when a deadline or urgent problem is involved.

Before your consultation

Keep these together

  • The issue, desired outcome, and urgent dates
  • The lawyer’s full name and relevant experience
  • Written fee and scope information
  • A clear agreement about the next action
